Today is Thursday and the Mindil Beach sunset markets are on this afternoon. Apparently a person cannot visit Darwin without going to the popular Mindil markets. They are famous around here.
The markets don't start till 5pm so we have some time to kill as it is only 1pm. We drive around the city and come across Cullen Bay. Cullen Bay is very nice and I am sure all these beautiful houses overlooking the harbour have a hefty price tag attached to them.

The city of Darwin is very small, very green and very tropical looking. The pubs look fantastic and are in full swing. There are a few backpacker hostels in the same strip as the pubs so I am guessing that the pubs are a popular haunt for the fellow backpacker. I wonder if we will personally get to check them out. mmmm nows the time to look for a day and night child care service.
As most people know, Cyclone Tracy wiped out most of Darwin and its surrounding areas in 1974. So everything is fairly new here. They did try and restore some buildings but everything has a newish feel about it. We will learn more about Cyclone Tracy when we visit the museum. They have a massive display of the frightful event and a reanctment room here. We are really looking forward to this visit.
We head over to Mindil Beach around 3pm thinking we could walk around on the beach or look at shops before the markets start. There is nothing here but beach and markets. The sand is way to hot to walk on, the water feels like warm bath water and people are still setting up their stalls. The girls find some cool looking shells on the beach and some of the food and drink stalls open early. We treat the girls to a milkshake while we wait.

The sand is too hot for these spunky spectators
The markets are probably the best markets I have been to. There are lots of crafty stalls and international quisine stalls here. It is packed with people everywhere. Too packed for Waz's liking so we move to the side to watch a band play. There is a didgeridoo band playing which we thoroughly enjoy. Here we also enjoy some chinese food for dinner.

We get our posy on the beach at around 6 ready for a 6.30 sunset and the girls enjoy a play on the small sand dunes behind us.
As it turns out the sunset is breathtaking and it draws a large crowd.
Lilly ran wild on the beach. She went into the water clothes and all and then decided to roll around in the sticky sand. She looked like a giant cinnamon donut.
