DAY 96 - 24/05/2010 - Howard Springs, NT

Early hours of this morning, Lilly woke up with almost 39 degrees temp. She seemed to be helucinating a little. Nurofen works wonders.

Off to the doctors first thing. We suspect UTI. All symptons fit. It looks like we were right and we get her on antibiotics today.

We spend the rest of the day in the comfort of our air conditioned van.

Alicia and Taylah enjoyed a long swim in the pool and an afternoon play with their Bratz dolls.

Waz and I disagree over the Gibb River Rd. I worry about the damage it may cause and Waz is excited. I don't think we will ever meet eye to eye on the GRR.

DAY 95 - 23/05/2010 - Howard Springs, NT

Another very humid day and the toads are still alive and hanging in the tree. Cane toads are tough.

We took the girls to a waterslide park near the city. It is a public pool with free admission. It has 3 waterslides, a large lagoon shaped pool and a water playground like Buckaneer Bay.

It finally starts to rain and Lilly was feeling a little feverish so we leave the water park and head back home.

Its an alcohol free day today for me and I feel good for it. Early night tonight.

DAY 94 - 22/05/2010 - Howard Springs, NT

Today was declared a Fiji day. This means we stay in and around the pool all day, eating, drinking, sunbaking, reading and swimming. We are not allowed to do anything else.

We had a very relaxing day and polished off a great day with lamb chops on the bbq and a few alcoholic beverages.

We met a young family from the Sunshine Coast who are staying here for a couple of days. Aaron and Michelle have 2 daughters aged 4 and 3 and are also travelling around the country. We enjoyed a few drinks with them.

Tonight Alicia enjoyed playing a game of toad chucking with some boys in the park. What they do is they tie 2 cane toads by the foot together with some fishing wire, allowing space between the 2 toads. They then throw the toads up into the tree until they get snagged on a branch. They managed to get about 10 toads up there. It looked like a Xmas tree. Aaron taught them how to do this.

DAY 93 - 21/05/2010 - Howard Springs, NT

Today Warren went on a fishing charter day trip out to blue waters. They sailed 40 nautical miles out to sea. There were 6 people on the boat and everyone caught fish with Waz snagging the catch of the day. His huge Jewfish measuring 130 cm long and a guess weight of 20kg.

Warren's stoked, he got catch of the day

By mid morning the poor bugger experienced some seasick. He took his travel meds too late and probably spewed them back up. He couldn't even look at the water without vomiting. Finally coming good by the afternoon, he was able to polish off  his beers and come home a happy but very smelly fisherman, eeww.

Us girls had our own busy day back at the caravan park whilst the man of the van was out catching dinner. The girls caught up on some school work, I played on the laptop and Lilly mucked about as usual.

Then we all lazed in the swimming pool, cooling off after an extremely humid day.

We really do need some rain to cool things down a bit. You wouldn't think it was coming into Winter. The weather here at the moment is like an extremely humid summers day back home. I don't think I could live in this sort of climate full time. The air con is getting a real workout. It's on all the time. We've been getting a few blackouts here and there for a couple of hours at a time and have experienced no air con and it was awful, especially at night whilst trying to sleep. Sometimes I worry that it will crap itself from being overused.

Thanks to Waz, we enjoyed some yummy bbq fish, hot chips and salad for dinner.

DAY 92 - 20/05/2010 - Howard Springs, NT

My toothache is getting worse. I haven't been able to eat much. I am so glad my dentist appointment is on today.

My appointment was at 4pm. As it turns out, I had a fairly large hole. The dentist said that if it was 1/2 mm bigger I would of required root canal treatment. I am very lucky but he could not guarantee that I won't have problems with the tooth in the future. I am still feeling sick and dizzy from the Panadene Forte I took 3 hours before my appointment.

Tonight the transformer on the street adjacent to the van park caught fire. We could see it clearly over the fence from our caravan. After a few minutes the transformer box blew up and sparks flew everywhere. The sound was loud. It was like hundreds of fireworks going off at once inside a metal box. The fire brigade, police and the energy company turned up. It was a bit of excitment for the night and talk of the park. Everyones power went out till close to midnight. No air con which sucks. It is very humid tonight.

DAY 91 - 19/05/2010 - Howard Springs, NT

Lilly started toilet training this week but today she managed to get one in the potty. All we heard from Lilly is "yes, I did it". I asked her what she done and she said "wee" and I asked her where? She said "there" and pointed to the potty. We all made a big deal about it. Hi fives all round. Hopefully it won't take us too long to teach her.

Today Lilly also jumped in the pool without her Wahu vest on and just started swimming. More high fives all round. We were all shocked, especially her. She's never had a swimming lesson before but obviously wearing a floatation vest has helped her to learn how to use her arms and legs in the pool. We will still make her put her vest on if Waz or I are not in the pool with her. Its nice to know that if she accidentally falls in without floaties she can get to the side ok.

I have a toothache today and its getting worse as the day goes on. I have booked an appointment with a dentist tomorrow. Hope he or she is kind.

DAY 90 - 18/05/2010 - Howard Springs, NT

This morning we extended our stay for another 11 days. Love it here and still so much to do.

We drove into Casuarina this morning to check out the big shopping centre that everyone raves about. We needed to get a few things and all the big stores were here. As we walked past the cinemas we got a big whiff of the popcorn. This is when we realised that it was tight arse Tuesday and havn't been to the movies in a while. What better time than the present to watch a film. We watched Iron Man 2. It was an ok movie. Waz thinks the first one is better but the girls loved it.

Upon leaving the cinema we noticed it had finally rained. When we got back to the van park everything was flooded. Not badly but big puddles everywhere. Then we noticed our annexe and under our van was flooded. Aaaargh not happy jan.

By nighttime the water had subsided. No damage done. Usually we have the Engel under there.....lucky we didn't.

We are on an alcohol ban today. Too much drinking going on.

Tonight we went to the Casino for dinner. They have a seafood buffet dinner on there. The food was great and the dessert was fantastic. We also manage to stick to our alcohol ban, cokes all round. The only person that got off chops tonight was Lilly. Without anyone realising, she had drunk a large cup of full strenghth coke and just before had some chocolate cake for dessert. Within minutes she went so hyper. OMG I have never seen anything like this. It was so funny. People near us thought she was hilarious but we had to leave because she was out of control. She was running around tables and then getting on all fours and acting like a cat.

It took Lilly a good hour to come down off the sugar hit.

We all went to bed early with full belly's except for Taylah who spewed up her dinner when we got home. Calamari and jelly don't mix well and that is what she had on her plate, at the same time. EEWW is the word I'm looking for.

DAY 89 - 17/05/2010 - Howard Springs, NT

Today I spent most of the day relaxing and updating this blog.

The afternoon involved swimming and playing cricket. It is very humid at the moment and we are hoping for some rain to give us relief from this humidity. Running around playing cricket was probably not the smartest thing to do in this sort of weather but the kids enjoyed themselves.

We stayed up very late tonight chatting and drinking with the neighbours.

DAY 88 - 16/05/2010 - Howard Springs, NT

Today we visited Fanny Bay Gaol, the museum and art gallery, the Monsoon Pub and the Mindil Markets which are also on Sundays.

Our friends, Chris and Leigh which we met during our travels, arrived in Howard Springs this morning and have set up camp beside us. They joined us today on our site seeing adventures around Darwin.

Heritage listed Fanny Bay Gaol operated between 1883 to 1979. The legal documents on display regarding the prisoners were interesting to read. Surprisingly, quite a few people went to gaol for drinking straight metholated spirits. We walked thru and checked out the cells, kitchen, washhouse, solitary confinement and the eeriest of all...the gallows. The last person hung here was in 1952.

Enter the gallows

Warren's re-enacment of the last hanging

We enjoyed our visit to the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT.

The main attraction was the Cyclone Tracy exhibit. This exhibit was very fascinating. There were huge satelite pictures displaying the area before the cyclone hit, a few days after it hit and 10 years after it hit. A small movie played continually showing true footage of the event. The footage was of a news reporter driving through town hours after the cyclone hit, commentating and filming the destruction.

There was a dark room you could enter where they re-enact the sound of Cyclone Tracy. This gives you a good idea what people went through and what a scary time it was for them.

The story goes like this. The news announced a huge cyclone called Selma, was going to hit Darwin early December in 1974. Cyclone Selma had changed course and fizzled out to sea causing nothing more than some wind and a lot of rain. So when the cyclone Tracy warnings made the news, people didn't take it seriously thinking that it would do the same thing as cyclone Selma did and everyone was caught in the usual Christmas spirit and not giving this current news much thought. Just before midnight on Christmas Eve, cyclone Tracy hit Darwin with extreme force. This went on for a bit and then everything went quiet. People assumed that the cyclone had ended, and they came out of their houses to survey the damage. What they didn't know was that they were in the eye of the cyclone which explained the calmness. The eye was that huge it covered the whole of Darwin and surrounding areas. Then it really hit and it hit harder the second time around. This is when most of the destructive damages occured.

Houses back then were not built to withstand a huge cyclone, hence the extent of the damage caused by Tracy. Thousands of houses were destroyed and hundreds damaged. Post Cyclone Tracy, specifications of building structures changed and strengths of houses improved. Everyone was also required to build a cyclone shelter on their property.

We also met Sweetheart, the Top End's most famous croc. I can't remember what he was famous for but he was humungus.

"Sweetheart" is a real stuffed croc.

Feeling a bit thirsty and pekish we head over to the Monsoon Pub on Mitchell Street for some beer and hot chips. The beer was cold and the chips were yum.

Cheers!

The Mindil Beach Sunset Markets are also on Sundays. This afternoon we thought we would give some Japanese food and quail a run. The food was delicious.

A man has built a sand sculpture. We saw him start it on Thursday.

Alicia and Taylah had a go at whip cracking here. Taylah nearly got it cracking and Alicia managed to crack it twice. Go Girl!

Lilly enjoyed watching her big sisters cracking the whip.

DAY 87 - 15/05/2010 - Howard Springs, NT

Today we visited Crocasaurus Cove.

We had lots of fun here.

The feeding of the large crocs was a sight to see especially when 5 metre Chopper missed his chicken and his jaw snapped shut with enormous force. The sound of that was awesome.

Croc fishing was fun. We all had turns feeding 3 year old saltys meat on a fishing hook. They were fiesty little creatures.

Crocasaurus Cove prides itself as having the largest reptile display in Australia.

The dreaded Brown Snake

Alicia's favourite, Pig Faced Turtle

We watched handlers feed these reptile thru the glass display window and then they brought reptiles for us to pat and hold. We held an albino Blue Tongue Lizard, a spikey looking lizard, a miniture snake and a large Olive Python about the same size as I witnessed in the toilet in Mataranka. We got to hold them for quite some time.

Smooth to touch

Very cool to hold

Not sure about this one mum

Say Cheers!

mmmmmm nice shoes

Its the snake chain

The girls also got to hold and were photographed holding a 10 month old Salt Water Crocodile. This was a highlight of their day.

I was so proud of my girls today. They were so confident with the animals and handled them like experienced handlers.
