DAY 164 - 31/07/2010 - Denham, WA & Shark Bay, WA

Very tired this morning. Late night, lots of night loo visits and our neighbours are early noisy risers. For a change, Lilly didn't wake at all.

We got the van ready to go and obtained permission for a late check out and to leave the van parked here while we visit Monkey Mia.

Monkey Mia is only a 15 min drive away from where we were staying. The dolphins come in for a feed only in the morning and we were given rough times between 7.30 and midday. Apparently the dolphins come in when they want.

On the way we nearly run over an emu. It ran out in front of us and Waz was quick to brake and avoid the wannabe road kill.

We also stopped at various lookouts along the way and got some fantastic photos.

This isn't the emu we nearly hit. Its just another random.

We arrive at Monkey Mia around 9.30am, pay our entry fee and we were informed that we had just missed a feeding.

There isn't much here other than a few small shops, information counter, a cafe and the Monkey Mia Resort. We walk around and browse in the shops. It is so quiet here.

Around 10ish we notice that the dolphins are near the waters edge and there are some people already there. We made our way down to the waterfront and there were guides talking to the small audience.

They provided information about the dolphins and what we can and can't do during feeding time. There are lots of rules. We had been warned about the rules by other travellors who said that Monkey Mia isn't like it used to be but we couldn't come to Shark Bay without visiting here. We were not allowed to stand in the water during actual feeding time and the guides said they choose who gets to feed the dolphin. Lucky for us Alicia, Taylah and Lilly were one of the chosen ones. Alicia opted not to do it because that entailed taking her volleys off. I carried Lilly over but she wouldn't touch the fish. Taylah flew the flag for the Jelfs family and was only too happy to feed it a slimy fish.

Some of these dolphins weren't as flash looking as the ones you see in captivity. Some had scars on their body, old war wounds, which is what is expected with wild dolphins.

The girls seemed more impressed with the huge pelican proudly parading on the beach. Tourist were taking turns standing beside it taking photos. We also had a turn. It seemed to be enjoying the attention and stood there for ages.

We drove back to the van park to pick up our home and we head to Whale Bone which is one of the free stays along the Shark Bay coastline. There are about 5 of them and we pick it because we like the name. The local council only allow people to stay at these free stays for one day only and there are no facilities here at all.

We arrive at Whale Bone and we're pleased with what we see. We set up camp close to the water. The view is beautiful. Its such a pretty beach.

The girls have their own little beach to play on and there are only 4 other vans here and we are spread out from one another so it feels like we are the only ones here.

The girls enjoy playing on the sand, craft and journal writing.

Our gorgeous day comes to an end with a baked dinner, wine and a beautiful sun set.
