DAY 231 - 06/10/2010 - Nullarbor Crossing - Hampton Roe Plains, WA

We devour bacon, eggs and hashbrown burgers for brekky and continue our Nullarbor crossing adventure.

The girls have a quick stretch of the legs while Waz tops up on fuel.

The plan is to drive all day and only stop to get fuel.

We are experiencing strong head wind and the pajero is loving the fuel and guzzling like theres no tomorrow. Probably only getting 400km per tank. We are also the heaviest we've been so far. Lots of food, water and wood on board.

We come to 90 Mile Straight which as the sign suggests, is the longest straight road in Australia.

Its a long road.

We stopped off to see Caiguna Blowhole. We pulled over, read the blowhole information sign then followed an inland trail for 5km, till it came to an abrupt end. What.......no blowhole in sight. We are in the middle of no where and I mean no where. We drove back to the sign and I said to Waz, "wouldn't it be funny if the blowhole was behind the sign". Sure enough.....it was. Not very funny cause we wasted over an hour driving off road to a dead end and had to drive out. And just to add more salt to the wound. It wasn't blowing anything at all. Apparantly when it is blowing the sound is supposed to be awesome. That will do me. "Damn you blowhole, you suck".

Unfortunatley, we don't come across any wild animals today.

The views over the Roe Plains was an amazing sight. Its the first hilly part of the road we come across and as we are coming to the crest of the hill we notice a sign which says lookout to the left. We are still burnt by the blowhole experience and think stuff it, not stopping. We should have because when we come to the top of the hill and start our decent, we look to the right and the view of the plains is breathtaking. Its too late to stop and there isn't enough room for a U turn. I try and photograph this while still moving, which does not do it justice. Its the flatest land we have ever seen.

Along the way we came across dressed up rocks and trees. They are dressed in t-shirts or ornamented with tinsel, empty beer bottles or thongs. This breaks the monotony of the road.

The girls are doing the trip well. They have lots to do in the car and the promise of a camp fire at the next destination pleases them.

Cheeky Lilly poses for the photo.

Thats better. Mwah!

Waz has mastered the perfect camp fire and the girls love it. The nights are very cold and the fire will keep us warm.

"Moving these rocks are hard yakka".

"You can't scare me Taylah".

"All ready to go Dad".

We are camped at a rest area just after Madura Pass at a place called Moodini Bluff. There are others here also which means safety in numbers. We find a nice little pocket with trees and shrubs sheltering us from the road. No one can see us just driving past.

Taco's by campfire for dinner, red wine and toasted marshmellows for dessert.

Its an early night for all. Its going to be another long drive tomorrow and we want to get moving early.
