DAY 102 - 30/05/2010 - Howard Springs, NT & Jabiru - Kakadu National Park, NT

I am feeling a little under the weather today. My throats sore and I have a headache.

We are leaving Howard Springs today and are heading for Kakadu National Park.

On our way to Kakadu we stopped in at a learning centre called, the Gateway to the Wetlands. Here you can find information on the surrounding area and there is also a lookout. What stood out the most for me was the list of fatal attacks in Australia. Reading it really hits home on how dangerous crocs can be.

We arrive in Kakadu and we have decided to set up camp at the Kakadu Lodge in Jabiru. Its a really nice resort with a huge pool. There is also a bar area in the pool area which is a bonus. Its a shame that we are only here for 2 nights.

All but one of the 4wd tracks are closed which means we cannot see certain parts of the park because of these closures. Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls are two places which are only accessable by 4wd tracks. The closures are due to recent heavy rain falls and crocs. We do plan to visit Ubirr Rock, Nourlangie and Gunlom Falls during our stay here.

In the afternoon we drove to Ubirr to check out the Aboriginal Artwork and to climb the Ubirr Rock. Its a 1km circular track which takes you past various rock art sites.

The climb to the top of Ubirr is a moderate to steep climb. From the top of the rock are views of the wetlands and Arnham Land.

The sun is starting to make its decent and everything looks so green and vibrant from recent rains. The walk was enjoyable and the climb up the rock was easy and the views were amazing. What a spiritually calming place to visit. Lilly managed to do the walk on her own. She is getting very good at these walks.

We wanted to cross the East Aligator River but we found out from the Ranger that it is a no go zone. Apart from being tidal and running the risk of floating off down the river and getting eaten by crocs, but we don't have a permit to cross over to Arnham Land.

A person attempted to cross during the heavy rains and lost his car in the river.
