We left Frankston this morning and headed for Torquay. This town promotes itself as the surfing capital of Australia. It has the worlds largest surfing museum and is also home to the world famous Bells Beach which hosts the Rip Curl Surf Pro every year. As it turns out this competition is on at the moment and is in its final rounds so the town is buzzing with wax heads and tourists. The waves weren't that great today in Bells so the competition was moved to Winkipop and would possibly return to Bells tomorrow.
When you first drive into Torquay all you see is surf shop after surf shop on both sides of the road. They call this part of town, Surf City. There are also factory outlets here which we will definately check out soon. Torquay is also the gateway to the Great Ocean Road where we will be headed in a few days.
We set up camp right on the beach at the Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park. You can't see the beach from our van as we are high up behind sand dunes but the entrance to the beach is at the back of the park itself. This place is packed with other travellors. Its the busiest caravan park we've been so far. There are kids everywhere. Its still school holidays for Victorians and this park is also only 5 min away from Bells Beach. A lot of people camp here overnight before they set off on their Great Ocean Road experience.
It was quite late in the afternoon when we arrived here so we didn't do much else other than set up camp and have dinner. The girls had a little play in the playground and the rec room.
