DAY 54 - 12/04/2010 - Torquay, VIC

It is still very windy, very cold and it rains on and off.

The rear windscreen was repaired today but further repairs are required in order to attach the spare wheel to its bracket. We are unable to find someone who could repair it today but I am sure and hopeful we will sort this out at some point in our travels.

Not much else went on today except for Term 2 for home schooling started today.

Looking forward to heading off tomorrow and hopefully getting away from this pathetic cold snap.

DAY 53 - 11/04/2010 - Torquay, VIC

It was very cold and windy today which has kept us indoors and rugged up in our winter gear. The girls did school work and later watched movies and played with their toys.

We are really fed up with this crappy weather and can't wait to head to warmer places where we can make full use of the beautiful beaches we see along our journey.

DAY 52 - 10/04/2010 - Torquay, VIC

I spent most of this morning catching up on my blog site while Alicia and Taylah did some school work.

In the afternoon we went for a short walk along the coast. There is a track which starts at the back of the caravan park and runs along the cliffs overlooking the beach. The track takes you as far as Bells Beach. The view from the track and the various lookout points were amazing.

Once again we saw a lot of people out surfing.

As the sun would come out from behind the clouds the water would change from a blue to a dark teal colour. I could only imagine how beautiful the water would look if it was a cloudless sunny day.

We walked as far as nearby beach, Jan Juc then back to camp. It was getting late and we had dinner to organise.

DAY 51 - 09/04/2010 - Torquay, VIC

We were packed and ready to go when Waz reversed into the fire reel and smashed our rear windscreen. Not only were we not leaving today but we were here till our windscreen was due to arrive sometime Monday. So I'm guessing Tuesday will be our departure day. Not to worry....could be worse.

poor waz

We set back up again. Taylah and Alicia didn't mind cause they got to play with their new friends longer. As soon as they found out we weren't going they raced over to the playground to find them.

Later the weather had a turn for the worse. It had started to rain and it was windy and cold. Nothing much else to do other than drink, eat, watch movies and play boardgames. Its a hard life.

DAY 50 - 08/04/2010 - Torquay, VIC

We were planning on going to the Surf Pro at Bells today but it was cancelled due to poor conditions.

Instead we and it seemed every other tourist in town went to check out the surf shops and outlets in town. We found a few bargains and then headed back to camp.

The girls got out their cricket set and had a play with other kids in the grassed area directly opposite from us. They also enjoyed kicking around the footy with the boys next door. Waz was not too impressed with the type of footy it was because it was an AFL ball.

On our way to check out the beach

Later in the afternoon we went for a walk down to the beach. It was too cold for us to swim but there were lots of surfers in the water waiting to catch their big wave. It seems that everyone here surfs.

Lilly checks the swell.........

and is excited

and goes for a closer look

Lilly decided that looking wasn't enough and went into the water in all her clothes. She face planted right into an oncoming wave and got saturated. The water was freezing but this didn't seem to bother her at all except her lips went a bright purple. She walked back to the van without complaint.

DAY 49 - 07/04/2010 - Frankston, VIC & Torquay, VIC

We left Frankston this morning and headed for Torquay. This town promotes itself as the surfing capital of Australia. It has the worlds largest surfing museum and is also home to the world famous Bells Beach which hosts the Rip Curl Surf Pro every year. As it turns out this competition is on at the moment and is in its final rounds so the town is buzzing with wax heads and tourists. The waves weren't that great today in Bells so the competition was moved to Winkipop and would possibly return to Bells tomorrow.

When you first drive into Torquay all you see is surf shop after surf shop on both sides of the road. They call this part of town, Surf City. There are also factory outlets here which we will definately check out soon. Torquay is also the gateway to the Great Ocean Road where we will be headed in a few days.

We set up camp right on the beach at the Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park. You can't see the beach from our van as we are high up behind sand dunes but the entrance to the beach is at the back of the park itself. This place is packed with other travellors. Its the busiest caravan park we've been so far. There are kids everywhere. Its still school holidays for Victorians and this park is also only 5 min away from Bells Beach. A lot of people camp here overnight before they set off on their Great Ocean Road experience.

It was quite late in the afternoon when we arrived here so we didn't do much else other than set up camp and have dinner. The girls had a little play in the playground and the rec room.
