We packed food, drink, snorkle sets, boogey boards, toggs and other beach stuff. We are off to Cape Leveque. Cape Leveque Road is a 4wd only recommended road. The road is pretty rough and I don't think it had been graded recently.
First stop, Beagle Bay. Here is the church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church which is featured in the film, Bran Nu Day. Its smack bang in the middle of an Aboriginal Community. Three monks together with some Aboriginals built this church in 1917. It was beautiful. The inside of the church was decorated with timber, shells and mother of pearl.
We continued along Cape Leveque Road until we could go no further. We arrived at One Arm Point. We drove thru the Aboriginal community, Lombadina to get here.
We noticed there were locals with their dogs at the waters edge and there was a lot of blood in the water. We look closer and discover they were slaughtering two giant sea turtles. We all got out for a closer look. It was devestating to us but life to them. They eat sea turtle and they use the shell to make things. The only thing they don't eat or use is its guts and they got thrown into the water drawing in lemon sharks.
At last we make our way to Cape Leveque. We had actually driven past the turn off without realising and had to go back the way we had come.
Cape Leveque is beautiful. Red cliffs, white sand and pristine blue water.
The resort there charges $10 per vehicle to go onto the beach as the only way to access the beach is thru the resort itself. But the catch is, you cannot take your vehicle onto the beach unless you are staying at the resort. What a rort? Everyone was hungry and the plan was to drive onto the beach with all our gear and have lunch on it but that plan had now changed. So we thought lets just set up a picnic on the grass area right outside the resorts doors.
They wouldn't of been too happy with this as the kids were quite noisy and we didn't bother telling them to be quiet. Lilly enjoyed herself running up and down on the deck.
We ate our lunch, packed up and got our things for the beach.
It was quite a walk through the resort campgrounds onto the beach. We were so annoyed and we noticed lots of cars on the beach. Once set up we made the executive decision for Waz and Simon to go get the cars and bring them down onto the beach. Which they did, unnoticed.
The girls played in the water, explored rock pools, snorkled and the boys fished. Marie and I just sat on our towels watching the girls play. There were so many beautiful shells here and the girls spent all afternoon collecting them.
We didn't leave the beach until the sunset which really wasn't a good move as we really didn't want to do the drive back in the dark but it was so nice here and hard to leave.
When we drove back up to where the resort office was, I got pulled up by the office worker while I was taking all the kids to the showers. She asked where had we just come from and forgetting I said, "the beach". She was not very happy with this revelation and told me that because of people like us they would have to install boom gates. Boo hoo for her. We had a great day.
It was a long, dark, bumpy ride home.
