Day 111 - 08/06/2010 - Spring Creek, WA

Spring Creek is a popular free stay. There are lots of people camped here or have left their vans here while they camp in at the Bungle Bungles.

All the kids had fun last night building a fire. The fire was definately a good call cause it was pretty chilly once the sun went away.

I mucked up last nights dinner. We had these huge hamburgers that looked so good but silly me got the chocy sauce and the bbq sauce bottles mixed up and put chocy sauce on our hamburgers instead. We didn't realise until we were half way thru the burgers thinking this brand of sauce tasted a little different. I couldn't believe it. We were absolutely shattered, still hungry and in the middle of nowhere. Couldn't exactly drive out and get some take out instead.

This morning we are off to the Bungle Bungles. We are leaving our vans at Spring Creek while we drive in. Its a long drive and it's 4wd only recommended.

It was a long, bumpy corrugated ride. There were also many river crossings which made the drive all that more exciting. The girls loved it. We arrived at the Echidna Chasm end of the Bungle Bungles. It was aprox 1 1/2hrs round trip walk to see this Chasm and it was totally worth it. We walked thru narrow walls to get there. Apparently it was the perfect time of day to do this walk because the sun was at its highest and when it was shinning down inbetween the walls it reflected a fiery red throughout the Chasm.

It was a short drive to the other side of the Bungles to get to the Cathedral Gorge and the Beehive domes walk. You can see both of these areas on the same walk. The view of the Bungles from this side was so much more spectacular. We kept stopping along the way to just take in the scenery.

We had a picnic lunch before we tackled our second walk. This walk took us close to 2 hours to complete. It was a good walk into the Gorge. The girls together with the other kids ran ahead and found caves along the way.

The Cathedral Gorge was spectacular. I truely felt at peace here. We love love loved it.
 
 

The Beehive Domes consisted of a group of smaller Bungle Bungle domes which as the name suggests look like Beehives.

Just as we were leaving we watched the sun set over the Bungle Bungles. Awesome experience. The only bad thing is, it means we will be doing the drive and the river crossings in the dark. We got back to the vans in one piece, very dirty, tired and very hungry.

DAY 110 - 07/06/2010 - Halls Creek, WA & Spring Creek, WA

We got up nice and early. As expected the locals were partying all night. I was woken up by shouting throughout the night.

Today we drove out to the Wolfe Creek Crater. Its 152km away, along the Tanami Rd which is unsealed and corrugated.

Not only is this place famous because of the movie but it's also the 2nd largest crater in the world, measuring 850m in diameter. The biggest one is in Arizona.

We park our cars in front of the Wolfe Creek sign just like they do in the movie. It is very eery here. All you hear is the wind blowing and the sound of Kite birds up above.

We had just found out from other travellors that a man was here 2 nights ago threatening people with a knife and saying he was a serial killer. Noone got hurt and he was arrested and taken away. There's always one.

Its a short rocky climb up to the lip of the crater. Some stay up top and appreciate the view from above and some climb down into the crater and walk along the track.

We return back to our vans, hook up and head for Spring Creek.

There are quite a few vans in Spring Creek. Many leave their vans here and head into the Bungle Bungles to camp in tents. It seems quite safe here. The girls are happy that fires are allowed so they immediately start collecting sticks for the fire tonight.
