DAY 116 - 13/06/2010 - Derby, WA

I had lots of washing to do this morning and Waz cleaned the car some more. The girls did some school work and Lilly was hyper and driving us nuts. Even a walk around the caravan park didn't calm her down which usually does. Once all our chores were done we were going to go out and do some sight seeing.

There was a sign in the toilets advertising crab racing at the fishermans club. It sounded like fun so we thought we would go and see what it was all about.

It turned out to be a blast. Apparently there isn't much to do in Derby and that these crab races are an annual event and we just managed to be here at the right time of year. We met some top locals here who even offered to take us out on their boat out to the Archipelago to fish and visit some islands but unfortunately we are leaving tomorrow. We promised that we would take a rain check on that invitation and that if we were to return, we would call them.

At the crab races, spectators buy crabs at $5 a piece and enter them into heats. We bought 3 crabs. Their names were Kevin, Ralph and Max.

First, second and third go into the finals and all the rest go into a boiling hot pot. Our crabs didn't get further than the pot. Poor buggers.

Waiting for the race

and they're off

4th isn't good enough buddy, off to the pot you go

The crabs that have made it to the finals are auctioned off, spectators can bet on them and money can be won. All the losing crabs that went into the pot are cooked up and eaten by all. They charge $10 a plate for all you can eat crab and salad which was donated by a local cafe and was absolutely delicious. The crabs were also delicious and cooked to perfection. To top off a great day and night, the drinks were plenty and dirt cheap. They had a jumping castle for the kids to enjoy and which they did. We needed a day out like this. We had an absolute ball, the girls were spent and Waz and I went home half cut.

DAY 115 - 12/06/2010 - Ellenbrae, WA & Derby, WA

We couldn't leave Ellenbrae early enough. We wanted to get on with the Gibb River Rd. At this stage we don't know if we will stay overnight at Mount Barnett or drive straight thru to Derby. We would play it by ear.

About an hour into the drive we decided that nah, we want out. It's not for us. We stopped at Mount Barnett for an expensive fast food lunch. Just to give you an idea, Mrs Mack pies were the cheapest costing $7, burgers $17 and those microwave pizza subs were $12. It was a rip off but we wanted a quick lunch so we could be on our way. The fuel was also the dearest so far but no choice but to get some.

We said our goodbyes to Chris and Leigh and parted ways. They too looked like they had had enough but they chose to stay.

Off we went on our merry way, heading for Derby. This decision has made us happy again.

We finally hit bitumen road.

Sunset

We arrive in Derby at 5.30pm and we have set up camp at a local caravan park.

Our caravan and car are covered in red dust. The interior of the car is also covered in red dust as it appears that we were missing a plug for our rear air con vent and lots of dust has come thru it and into the car. What a mess. We try and clean as best as we can with a damp cloth but we really do need a vacuum, which we don't have. Oh well but we can say we survived the Gibb River Rd and we have the sticker to prove it.
